Minister heads to PNG after nods to possible new security deal

Mālō e lelei!

Exciting news: NZPBC is working towards hosting an event with NZ Minister for Foreign Affairs Nanaia Mahuta to talk about her recent trip to Papua New Guinea.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs has headed to Papua New Guinea for meetings as the possibility of a new security deal with the country surfaces, following widespread criticism of an earlier deal between PNG and China.

Minister Nanaia Mahuta flew into Port Moresby on Monday for a four day visit to hold face to face meetings, and visit development projects.

The trip follows a visit to PNG last week by Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong.

Early last week, Papua New Guinea Minister for Foreign Affairs Justin Tkatchenko made the surprise revelation his country had begun very early discussions with Australia about a possible new security treaty, which Tkatchenko said New Zealand could potentially become part of.

We will report back to you all when we hear Minister Nanaia Mahuta's response!
